MMS Holiday Parent News!

Winter is here and in just a few days we will be starting the Christmas break.  It is hard to believe that we are approaching the 1/2 year mark so quickly.  I hope that you all have a wonderful break with your kids and have time to enjoy your families during the holidays.  Below are a few topics that may be of interest to you to discuss with your child over the break and upcoming dates to be aware of.

Posting Online

It is not unusual to think back to our childhood and look at how different things are today.  One of the big differences is that children today can make a poor decision more quickly and publicly than we ever could.  I am referring to middle school students posting information online or sharing information digitally.  It may surprise many of you to know that each year we have students who share inappropriate photos or information with people online.  Sometimes it is with a friend and sometimes it is someone they do not know.  This can have a big effect on a child when that information is shared publicly and creates a safety concern for them. This often happens on students cell phones but sometimes happens on laptops in their bedrooms.  At MMS we talk about this type of behavior throughout the year and will be revisiting this in the new year.  I would encourage you to discuss this with your children over the break.  Ask them if they have been asked for inappropriate pictures or information.  If they say yes, how did they handle it.  It they say no, then how would they handle it if it happened.  It is good to have a plan.  Please remember that adolescents are impulsive and do not have an understanding of long term implications.  A student who makes good decisions all the time can make a bad one.  By talking with your child, letting them know that you are going to check their devices and their social media, accounts you help them make good choices and give them an excuse to use with their friends when they are asked to share online.  Their answer can be, “No way!  My mom and dad check my devices.”  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to speak with our school counselors or administration.  Here is a link to a site that can help you with your conversations on Privacy and Social Media.

Winter Wonderland

Each year the middle school students put on an event for the kindergarten students in our district.  The middle school students decorate the gym, some of our classrooms and halls, and welcome the kindergarteners to our school.  While the students are here they meet a middle school “buddy” who takes them through a variety of events and games.  They enact a story and complete some artwork and then head back to their own school.  This event is a wonderful event that connects our schools and gives our youngest learners a chance to connect with a middle school peer.  For our middle school students it provides them a mentoring opportunity to help a child enjoy their day and have some fun.  This event is planned by the Messalonskee Middle School Unified Arts Department and has been a success each year for the past 23 years.  One of our teachers at MMS can remember going through this event as a student.  It is a great tradition.
