Hello all MMS Families!
It has been a great start and it is wonderful to see all of our students come in and get settled in for a new year. Each month I will be communicating through this blog. At the start of the month, I will be sending you information about events for the month. Later, you will receive information about programs and events at our school, as well as information from our nurse and our school counselors. If you want to receive this information in your email, then make sure to sign up on the site. Also, remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay current with announcements and athletic updates.
Parent Advisory Committee
I will be having a parent advisory committee this year that will meet most months of the school year. The committee will give me feedback on the running of the school and will have opportunities to discuss and learn about things at MMS. The first meeting will be on September 15 @ 6:00PM in the MMS Library. The focus will be our addition of SPARK Time this year. I have included a yellow paper in your student’s packet with all the dates for the year and a sign up portion.
This year all students will be taking part in a physically active time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They will be learning about the activities over the upcoming week and will have an opportunity to sign up for preferences next Friday. The purpose of SPARK Time is to increase learning for our students. Research shows that after exercise, people are more focused and have increased capability to learn. There are also benefits to mood, anxiety and physical health.
Our Fall athletic season starts next week. If your child in interested in taking part in a sport then have them sign up. All information is on our website for the different sports. I want to put a plug in for our Football Team we have space on both teams and are looking for 8th graders who are interested in being an Eagle Football Player. If your child is interested then have them see our Athletic Director, Mr. Lisa, on Tuesday. Also if your child is interested in Football but is in the 6th grade, you can get information on the Youth Football Program at this link. For other sports and options look at our site.
Your students will be issued their laptops over the next couple of weeks. Laptops will not be able to go home before September 9th. The reason we hold off is to allow you to communicate your expectations for computer use at home. We recommend that laptops not be allowed in bedrooms, bathrooms or other unsupervised areas. Also, students should not be eating or drinking while on a laptop. If you would like to enroll in the laptop protection plan, you can find information on our website. If you would like more information about technology and things you should know as a parent, go to Common Sense Media. Check out this article on apps that your child might have on their phone.
At MMS we have a fun night most months. There is a DJ in the cafeteria, open gym, and snacks. It is open to all MMS students. We do allow MMS students to sign in a guest, as long as the parents of the MMS student are willing to take responsibility for the guest. The guest form is available in the main office. Tickets are sold ahead of time in the mornings before school. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The cost is $5.
Please make sure that your students clothing matches the dress code at MMS. During the warmer times of the year, this can be a bit of a problem. If you have any questions about the dress code, you can get the details on page 24 of the Parent Handbook.
