Tuesday is the RSU 18 Budget Vote in all the towns. This is the vote that validates the budget that was passed by the community at the May 12th meeting. Over the past few years there has been a lot of discussion about the school budgets and members of the community have been very involved in the budget process. The outcome of their requests for lower budgets has come in the form of cutting costs, personal and the development of a facilities committee to look at long term opportunities to reduce cost to the local tax payer.
The budget that you will be voting on is less then a 1% increase from last year’s budget. It funds text books, supplies and resources for students and teachers. At MMS we have reduced the number of teachers by 2 due to declining enrollment. We have done this over the years based on our changing enrollment. This budget is fiscally responsible to our taxpayers and at the same time maintains our current programming for our students.
The voting locations are listed below:
Belgrade: Community Center for All Seasons – 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
China: China Town Office – 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Oakland: Williams Elementary School – 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Rome: Rome Community Center – 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Sidney: Sidney Town Office – 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In addition to the school budget, you will be voting on if we should continue the budget validation referendum in the future. The district is required to periodically put this to the voters. If you vote to continue the validation then it means that we will continue to have the town meeting style budget meeting where residents vote on the budget one article at a time and then we follow up with voting at the local towns to accept that budget (this is the process we have been using). If you vote not to continue the validation then we would only have the town meeting style vote and the budget would be adopted at that meeting.
I hope that you will come out and vote yes on the budget on Tuesday (tomorrow). We need your support at the polls in order to maintain services for our students. Thank you.
