Hello all! Welcome to April!
We will be completing state testing next week. We have been taking the Maine State Assessment which is required of all students in the state in grades 3-8 and third year of high school. The test includes reading, writing and math assessment. I expect we will receive the results in the Fall and we use these to inform our curriculum, instruction and professional development decisions.
Honor Program Adjustment
I communicated out to everyone in a letter at the beginning of November about our honor roll system this year. We have decided to change the date for our Celebration of Excellence to June 1 for students with last name starting with the letters A-K and June 6 for students with last name starting with the letters L-Z. Both events are occurring at the Messalonskee High School Performing Arts Center and start at 6:00PM. The major reason for this change is related to our Unified Arts classes. Some of the 5 week classes have the opportunity to only certify in one learning goal whereas other classes can allow for certification of 4 or 5 learning goals. If a student has only had the classes that allow for 1 or 2 leaning goals then they do not have the same opportunity to reach the level of honors they are aiming for. By making this time change we can include more UA class rotations. If your child meets the requirements for honors then you will receive an invitation to attend this event. Invitations will go out at the end of the first week of May. For more information on how honors is calculated, click here.
As the weather begins to warm up and students dig out their clothes from the fall and summer it is important to remember that these items may not fit the way they did when they were put away for the winter. Please make sure that items meet our dress code which can be found in our handbook online.
District Chorus Holocaust Project
On April 27th the chorus program for Grade 5 through 12 will be recording songs that are linked to the Holocaust. Music was a huge part of the concentration camps and Mr. and Mrs. Rhein received a grant to have the students’ voices recorded. They are working in connection with the Holocaust Museum in Augusta. I am sure it will be an amazing CD.
