This year the seasons have not quite figured out when they want to arrive and leave. It has made things interesting but here we are in the month of March and Spring is on it’s way. It is also the time of the development of the district school budget and parent teacher conferences. In that light I wanted to share a few things with all of you.
The district teachers and administrators have been working diligently to put together a budget that is appropriate for educating our students and is fair to the taxpayers in the towns. We have looked at needs, class enrollments and other factors to put together a budget for next year. Mr Smith presented his budget to the School Board this week and that starts the process of the boards review and adjustment of the budget. Mr. Smith put forward a budget that is a 0.91% increase over this current year’s budget. I would encourage you to take part in the budget process. The dates to be aware of are:
March 14 & 15 – Budget Workshop @ 6PM @ MMS
March 23 – School Board Meeting – Discussion of the Proposed Budget @ 7PM @ MMS
April 6 – School Board Meeting – Adoption of the 2016-17 School Budget @7PM @ MMS
April 25(MMS), 26(JHB), 27(BCS), & 28(CMS) – Public Hearings Regarding the Proposed Budget @ 6PM
May 12 – District Budget Meeting @ 6PM @ the MHS Preforming Arts Center
May 24 – District Budget Validation Referendum – Local Voting Locations
The Budget Workshops are the times when the school board goes through the budget section by section and ask questions. Community members are welcome to attend these sessions and ask questions as well. The Discussion of the Proposed Budget is a work session where the board will discuss the budget and their thoughts about the different sections. This is also another good time for community members to attend to be able to share thoughts before the budget is decided on. The Adoption of the 2016-17 School Budget is the meeting where the school board will take action and adopt the budget they plan to send to the communities. The Public Hearings Regarding the Proposed Budget are held at the schools listed next to each date. These are meetings where the board’s budget will be presented and questions can be asked by community members. The District Budget Meeting is the town meeting styled meeting where each of the articles of the budget will be voted on by the members of the public who attend. This meeting decides what the budget will be that will go to the voters on May 24 for the District Budget Validation Referendum. I hope that you will be able to attend these important meetings and support the school board’s proposed budget. For more detailed information on the budget click here.
