MMS Parent News for October 2015

It always amazes me how fast the school year goes by.  Here we are, at the start of October and with fall weather moving in.   It is always a busy time of year as we all prepare for the winter, enjoy the sporting events of the fall season and start to think about the upcoming holidays.  Below are a few items that you may want to know about as you look ahead at the month.

MMS Paint Party

Due to the recent budgets and the fact that MMS is the newest building in our district, we have not kept up with some of our small maintenance items like painting.  Claire Heffernan  is our district grant writer and she was able to work with MMS to obtain a grant for 40 gallons of paint.  I want to thank the local business who made this donation, Campbell’s Agway True Value in Winslow.  We have planned a community painting party on Saturday, October 17th starting at 9:00AM.  We are looking for parents and students who would be willing to put in time helping us paint some of the halls and bathrooms at MMS.  We will give certificates for community service to anyone who takes part.  If you are willing to take part on that day then please sign up on our Sign up Genius.  I hope to see many of you there.

Flu Immunization Clinic

We sent home paperwork for you to sign your child up for our flu immunization clinic.  Forms are due back to MMS by October 7th and our clinic is set to occur on October 14th.  If you did not receive the paperwork then you can print off a form by clicking here. There are two different types of immunizations for the flu.  Intranasal contains live flu virus and is administered as a spray into the nasal passages.  If you want more information on the intranasal (live) flu vaccine click here.   The second type of vaccine is in the form of a shot that is given into the arm and does not contain live virus.  For information on the shot (not live) click here.  A few years ago the only type of vaccine was the intranasal and some parents did not want their child to have that type of vaccine.  If you do not want your child to have the intranasal vaccine then please write that at the top of the permission form.  If you have already sent in the form and did not write that then email Jayne Champagne, our school nurse, and she will add that to your form.  Her email is jchampagne@rsu18.org .

“Mix it up!” Day

On October 27 we will have an event we do a few times a year which is called Mix it up day.  During lunch on this day students will receive a lifesaver.  They will sit at tables with students with the same color lifesaver.  Once they get to the table they will have questions and activities that they can do together to spark conversation.  The purpose of mix it up day is to get students to meet and get to know students who are outside of their normal peer group.  This allows them to find out about each other and learn about people they might not have connected with any other way.  The more they know about each other, the more understanding they can be of their differences.

    • Yes. I was just notified today that they are going to postpone the hike due to the wet conditions posing a possible safety issue. They will communicate out a new date when it is set.
