Hello families! It has been wonderful to see all the students joining us here as we kick off a new year. Each month I will be communicating through this blog. At the start of the month, I will be sending your information about events for the month. Later, you will receive information about programs and events at our school, as well as information from our nurse and our school counselors. If you want to receive this information in your email, then make sure to sign up on the site. Also, remember to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay current with announcements and athletic updates.
At the start of the year, we send home a lot of paperwork for you to fill out. Please make sure to get that information updated and back to us this week. We want to have the most up-to-date information in the event of an emergency. We will be having fire drills and lock down drills throughout the year. We have a few extra ones at the start of the year so that students can get used to what will happen if we ever needed to evacuate the building.
Advisory/Sustained Silent Reading
At the start of every day, we will be having a 20 minute Advisory period where students will meet with a teacher from the building and have opportunities to talk about life at MMS. Students were placed in groups on their teams. In addition, at least three days a week students will be reading. Research on literacy indicates the importance of reading at least 90 minutes each week in order to grow as a reader. The coolest thing about this is that it works for all levels of readers. One easy thing you can do to help your child grow is to have them read. During this past year my wife and I read with our daughter for 20 minutes in the evening. It is great way to support your child’s education, spend time with them and lose yourself in a story for a while. If you have any questions about Advisory, ask a teacher on your child’s team or contact our Literacy Coach, Mary Glennon.
Your students will be issued their laptops over the next couple of weeks. Laptops will not be able to go home before September 8th. The reason we hold off is to allow you to communicate your expectations for computer use at home. We recommend that laptops not be allowed in bedrooms, bathrooms or other unsupervised areas. Also, students should not be eating or drinking while on a laptop. If you would like to enroll in the laptop protection plan, you can find information on our website.
If you would like more information about technology and things you should know as a parent, go to Common Sense Media.
Check out this article on apps that your child might have on their phone.
At MMS we have a fun night most months. There is a DJ in the cafeteria, open gym, and snacks. It is open to all MMS students. We do allow MMS students to sign in a guest, as long as the parents of the MMS student are willing to take responsibility for the guest. Tickets are sold ahead of time in the mornings before school. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The cost is $5.
Please make sure that your students clothing matches the dress code at MMS. During the warmer times of the year, this can be a bit of a problem. If you have any questions about the dress code, you can get the details on page 24 of the Parent Handbook.
