As the school year comes to a close and students and families begin their summer vacations it is easy to put thoughts of school in the back of your mind. Last night we had a Budget Meeting where the towns of RSU 18 approved a school budget that is a 1.9% increase from the 2014-15 school year. This budget is a reduction from the first budget that failed last month. Based on that first vote the school board made cuts that included administrative reduction/restructuring, charter school tuition, health insurance, a pre-K aide, 2 bus runs, 1.5 teaching positions and reductions to administration in adult education. All of these totaled a reduction to the RSU 18 budget from the first budget of $297,671.
The School board attempted to limit their cuts to areas that did not directly impact student programming. Based on this focus they did not make reductions in music lessons, some teaching positions that would impact class size, athletic programs, pay to play as well as other areas.
For the lack of 128 votes in May,
RSU 18 has cut almost $300,000 from the 2015-16 school budget.
Don’t want to cut more? PLEDGE to VOTE!
I would encourage all of you to go out and vote yes on our school budget on June 30. I feel that we have a budget that will allow us to move forward with our students learning and feel that additional cuts will negatively impact our learners. For this reason it is important to make time to vote on June 30 and if that date does not work for you then go in to your town office and complete an absentee ballot. The China town office number is 445-2014. All other numbers are in the picture below.
