Tomorrow night (May 27) the school board will hold a budget workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to begin the process of considering cost reductions to the proposed budget for the 2015-16 school year that failed last Tuesday. Although the budget put forward maintained all programming for the district, it failed to pass. Now the school board is tasked with the job of revisiting the budget to make decisions on what could possibly be cut with the least impact to students’ academic programs. After years of cutting and tight budgets, it will be a daunting task. I encourage all members of the community to take part in the process. Tomorrow night the school board will be looking at a number of cuts. These cuts could include the following:
School Administration-salary and position reductions
Teaching cuts at China Primary, Belgrade Central, James H. Bean, Messalonskee High and Middle Schools, as well as the lesson portion of the districts music program.
In the area of co-curricular and extra curricular programming the board will be looking at activity fees for participation, as well as the possible reduction of programs. These could include high cost programs, low enrollment programs, as well as freshman programs, middle school drama, and MHS Pep Band.
The reduction of cost for field trips through reduction or alternate means of funding.
The reduction of 3 school bus runs in China by moving from one run to two runs.
I feel that the budget that the board put forward to the community was the best budget for the students of our district. Those who voted have said that we need to cut more. I encourage you all to take part in the process. Those who are voting are asking for reduced taxes and are giving our school board the task to lower the budget. If you want the school board to be able to consider your thoughts on this budget or the proposed cuts, you need to attend the meeting tomorrow night. Below is the list of dates for the budget process for RSU 18. I hope to see you there.
