Hello all! I hope that the holiday season when well for everyone and that you were able to spend some time with your family and relax a bit. We are back to school and the start has gone well.
January 13, 2015 – Beginning Band Concert – 7:00PM – Messalonskee High School PAC
This is a great event to attend to see the amazing things that the students at MMS have been learning. I am always impressed with what the kids can do with their instruments given the fact that a few months ago they were not able to play anything. It is an amazing year of growth in their musical education. Come and join us and enjoy the music.
January 16, 2015 – Teacher Training – Noon Dismissal of Students
We have a training planned in the afternoon on this day and students will leave school at noon. All students will have an opportunity to get lunch before they leave. Teachers will be working on Literacy and Complex Reasoning training to better meet the needs of our students.
January 19, 2015 – Martin Luther Kin Jr. Day – No School for all
January 20, 2015 – Teacher Training Day – No School for students
On this day staff will continue to look at reasoning processes and instructing them with students so that they are able to problem solve and analyze at a higher level. We will also be taking some time to look at the new state assessment that all students will take this year. It is called the Smarter Balanced Assessment. This assessment will increase the rigor level tat which students in the state of Maine are tested. This is a computer based assessment and requires students to have stronger skills in areas like using text material to support their answers and using math to solve problems. These are great skills to have and teachers are working hard with students to develop these skills not just for the assessment but to better serve them in high school and beyond. If you would like more information on this assessment, please click here or take a sample test to see what it will be like here.
January 23, 2015 – Student Fun Night – 6:00PM-9:00PM – MMS Cafeteria and Gym
January 23, 2015 – Parent Night – 6:00PM – MMS Library – Bullying – What is done and what you can do.
This session will review the school districts practices around bullying. We have a policy that is new this year and the state of Maine has recently changed the definition of bullying. Most students plead with their parents not to report things to the school and they may not report it themselves out of fear of retaliation. Most bullying can be addressed and stopped quickly when the school, parents and students are all working together. This night is geared toward informing you as a parent of what you can do and things you might want to talk with your child about around topics like online interactions through Facebook & Xbox Live or how to deal with bullying and how to help your child not internalize the negative messages they might be receiving from some of their peers.
