MMS Parent News – September 25, 2013

Hello all!

I hope the past couple of weeks have gone well for you and your families.  We are starting to settle into a routine and dive into the Learning goals. Our curriculum and assessment night is tomorrow night (September 26) starting at 6:00pm.  This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and learn about the team and their focus for the year.  This is also a great opportunity to have your questions answered.   The Agenda for the evening is listed below.  I would encourage you to arrive early,  as we tend to have a large turn out and parking can be difficult. If you are arriving on time you may need to park at WES or MHS. Unified Arts Teachers will be in their rooms for the open house and team teachers will be in their team area.

6:00pm-6:30pm  – Unified Arts Teachers Open House

6:30pm-7:00pm – Mr. Hatch in the Gymnasium

7:00pm-8:00pm – Time with Team Teachers

Our Flu Immunization Clinic is on October 28th.  Permission forms were sent home with your child in the last couple of weeks.  If you did not see that information then click here to access it online.

Laptops were distributed last week and students have started to bring them home.  I would encourage you to discuss treating the laptop well, rules in your home and internet safety.  For information on these topics click here.  I would encourage you to set limits on time on the laptops and to only allow use in common areas.  Know that the computers have working cameras and if there is wireless access in your home then the computer can connect to the outside world in the form of chats and videos.  Some parents have told me that they have felt that they could not take away the computer because their child told them that they had to do homework.  If your child is having a difficult time managing their time on the laptop well and you feel that you need to take the computer then please do so.  Teachers will work with you to ensure that your child can complete his or her work.  Students should not have more then 1 1/2 hours of homework on any night.  If your child is taking longer than that they are likely engaging with other programs on the computer that are not a part of their homework.  If you have questions please contact your child’s teachers or myself.

We will be launching the parent portal after October 4th.  We will be sending home a mailing with information on how to access information on your child.  The portal is a lot more user friendly and the adjustments answer a lot of parents questions from last year.  We will be posting digital instructions on our website for the launch and I will be focusing on Educate and Learning goals on the Parent Informational Night scheduled for Wednesday, October 9, 2013 starting at 6:00pm in the MMS Cafeteria.

Students will be taking the state NECAP tests on October 1, 2, 3 and 8.  The assessments test reading, math and for 8th grade students only, writing.  We will test in the mornings on those dates.  Please make sure your child is rested and has a good breakfast.

Have a great end of the month!  I hope to see you tomorrow night.
